The Risks of Texting While Driving
Texting while driving is a fairly new trend, and so, there is not a lot of information on how many road accidents could be attributed to texting while driving. However, a number of preliminary data have been gathered.
Texting While Driving Facts
The NHTSA of National Highway Traffic Safety Administration collected following data:
80 percent of all crashes happen because of distracted drivers
65 percent all near-crashes happen because of unfocused drivers
Survey conducted by National Mutual Insurance found out that
37 percent of drivers aging 19 to 33 are texting while they are driving
21 percent of drivers aging 45 to 63 years old text while driving
Teenagers Texting While Driving
Research conducted by Nielsen shows that teens send almost 80 text messages a day. This equates to sending thousands of text a month. What the research doesn't show is the number of texts that the teens are receiving as well.
As with the full statistics concerning texting while driving, there's no hard information to equate teen driving incidents with texting while driving. However, a research was performed by Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters and Eastern Virginia Medical School.
This research enlisted twenty-one teenagers at the age of 16 and 18 to join a simulated driving lesson where they will be asked to text while driving, use MP3 players and talk on the phone.
The results showed that texting while driving was the major cause of the teenagers swerving out of the lane, hitting pedestrians and slowing down to unsafe speeds.
With no hard statistics to associate teen driving incidents with texting while driving, it's hard to make a strong case against texting while driving.
Texting while driving is a huge distraction for all, regardless of what other people might say. So, if you look at the statistics given above, it shows that teenagers are more likely to get in a mishap when texting while driving, and their guardians are allowing that behavior.
